Where Heaven Meets Earth
|
The ideal of a Tropical paradise is made real at Kapalua-the fragrance of tropical blossoms, the warm enveloping breezes, the tidal rhythms of the Pacific ... but the variety of accommodations available to Kapalua visitors embrace a common thread you'll translate it as gracious island hospitality, but you'll remember it always as ho'okipa.
The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua recently received the prestigious AAA Five Diamond Award and through this award it has been recognized and acknowledged as one of a precious few of the world's best hotel properties.

From the original Hawaiian artwork that is scattered like pearls about the hotel to the brilliance of its plantation-inspired design, this hotel blends the inimitable Ritz-Carlton signature style with the spirit of aloha. The result is magical. Guests are seduced by spacious private lanais, commanding ocean vistas, gleaming marble baths and details like plush terry robes for lounging after a day on the pristine beach. An exceptional, fully-supervised Ritz Kids program frees parents to take advantage of the spa, hiking and nature programs, shops, galleries and boutiques. The property's four superlative restaurants: The Anuenue Room, The Terrace, The Banyan Tree and The Beach House, are all under the direction of award-winning Executive Chef Patrick Callarec. Serving Hawaiian Provencal, Pacific Rim and traditional American dishes, there is something for everyone.
The Kapalua Villas are the answer for travelers who long for a private retreat in paradise. Clustered in three scenic enclaves, over 250 units are scattered anlOng gardens, pools, and private recreational facilities. They feature all the comforts of home with fully equipped kitchens, washers and dryers, two televisions, VCR, and private lanais. Vi11a guests enjoy resort benefits of advance tee times on all three Kapalua courses, complimentary tennis, 24-hour reception center, maintenance staff and concierge activity desk and resort-wide charging privileges.
In addition to the villas, travelers have the opportunity to enjoy the good life by reserving 3, 4, and 5 bedroom estates that showcase the superb settings and views. The homes have been individually designed and magnificently furnished with almost 4,000 square feet of luxurious living space.
The centerpiece of Kapaluas resort properties is the 194-room Kapalua Bay Hotel. The open-air terraced design presents guests with breathtaking panoramas of the Pacific and the neighboring islands of Moloka'i and Lana'i. Every imaginable amenity including private lanais, a heated swimming pool, a full-service salon, recreational activities and special children's programs complete the resort experience. Recently placed under the management of the Halekulani Corporation, the hotel is preparing to enter the new millennium by elevating its lofty standards of pampering luxury and uncompromising attention to detail. A highlight of the Kapalua Bay Hotel are meals at the three superb restaurants: The Day Club, The Garden and The Pool Terrace.
KAPALUA'S THREE AWARD·WINNING 18·HOLE GOLF COURSES HAVE the distinct advantage of being situated in one of the most spectacular settings on earth, but that didn't prevent the resort from pushing their quest for excellence to a new level. The Arnold Palmer and Francis Duane-designed Bay Course is a favorite of golfers around the world. Its signature #'5 requires players to carry their tee shots over the lapis-blue Oneloa Bay. It is consistently voted a favorite among resort golfers around the world. Kapalua's Village Course, designed by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay, meanders up and down the West Maui Mountains in a series of spectacularly scenic twists and turns among stands of cool pines and eucalyptus. And in the process, poses challenges to seasoned professionals, while not discouraging the beginner. The six-year-old Plantation Course created by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore unfurls across island canyons and panoramic oceanfront plateaus. This 7,263-yard par 73 is golf on a grand scale. The Bay and Plantation courses play host to the Lincoln-Mercury Kapalua International Championship in November and attract the world's top professionals.
But the most remarkable trait these courses share is their designation as Certified Audubon Sanctuaries. Certification requires the courses to meet stringent environmental standards set forth by Audubon International for water conservation, habitat enhancement, public involvement, integrated pest management and more. To complement and reinforce its commitment to remaining a wildlife habitat, the resort offers a unique environmental program called "Eagles and Birdies at Kapalua," encouraging aware-ness and interest in the 23 varieties of birds golfers may encounter on the links.
Kapalua is not simply a resort property, it is a partnership between man and nature. The guiding philosophy is an ancient Hawaiian principle, maiama ka 'aina, or "care of the land" and as a result, Kapalua begins and ends in two immense nature preserves. The ancient Hawaiian principle of lokalzi, meaning "right balance and unity" was invoked here, as well. This was the concept that guided the earliest stages of the site design.
Kapalua is firmly commited to the preservation and conservation of its 23,000 acres which contain some of the most pristine and biologically rich areas remaining in Hawai'i. In 1992, Maui Land & Pineapple Company, the parent company ofKapalua Land Company, dedicated an 8,661-acre native forest to The Nature Conservancy of Hawai'i. It is the largest private preserve in the state and is home to an extraordinary bio-diversity. An intrinsic part of the beauty of Kapalua Resort is its dramatic lava shoreline with five bays and three beaches, one of which was named "best beach in Amcrira" in a study of 650 beaches. Two adjoining bays, Honolua and Mokule'ia, have been designated a Hawai'i State Marine Life Conservation District. Snorkelers and divers swim among brilliant coral gardens, ancient lava formations, and a dazzling array of marine life.
Kapalua has succeeded in achieving malama ka 'aina and lokahi, as testament by Audubon International President Ronald G. Dodson. In August of 1996, Kapalua was the first resort in the world to be certified under the new Audubon Heritage Program. After evaluating every aspect of the resort, Dodson says, "We wanted to establish a model of international significance. (Kapalua) has a diverse ecology, diverse usage and long heritage of caring for the land. It's like taking many threads and weaving each one into a fabric so beautiful others will emulate it."
