Anne Fontaine continues her love stories of contradictory, passionate and mischievous. Fontaine, who has directed such films as Before Coco Chanel, The Forbidden Love and The Language of Love, pursues modern depictions of a classic story. Fontaine’s hometown Catherine Braillat’ın style similar films I’ve mentioned in my writing, Braillat was trying to blend and normalize taboo issues, of course, Fontaine more women’s desire to become the object of the male world is experiencing a drift against the opposite sex. Pure As Snow is an unbearable attraction to innocence.
The film is a bit of a conflict between youth and beauty, aging and jealousy. So Claire and Maud. Claire works at the hotel from her father and the stepmother Maud runs the hotel! When Maud sees that his girlfriend has a crush on Claire, he plans to destroy it. But Claire doesn’t die and takes refuge in a country town. Claire, young and beautiful, suddenly becomes the favorite of the town’s men, the object of desire. Innocence is another feature that we want to emphasize here!
With his mother’s death, Claire is resurrected and re-explores life and sexuality. That’s why he doesn’t want to go back to his previous life, where he feels safe and free. We’re actually watching the provincial version of Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs, everything is okay, but the prince is missing! What we know is perhaps a hundredth metamorphosed version of what we are used to. Although the film does not squeeze, it has a repetitive structure. I don’t know what kind of effect it would be to watch love, love’s attacking the human soul and body once again, but I’m obviously more impressed by the atmosphere in which the film was shot, the misty misty nature!
One of the things that doesn’t surprise us here is that Maud, the stepmother Isabelle Huppert, plays. Huppert comes out from behind if you have a female character in mysterious evil but not so master settings. He also portrays the evil witch, who hopes for poison and seeks opportunities to destroy his opponent. Without showing jealousy and malice, a mother tries to seduce her rival with compassion, and we watch a story of hundreds of years. Like I said, one of the things I love about the film is that it doesn’t create a prince. Creating many dwarfs and creating women like that!
After all, those who want to follow a modern fairy tale from the hands of Anne Fontaine and hear a repetitive tale about the world of men and women may prefer the Unbearable Attractiveness of Innocence! One way or another, fairy tales are classics where we will knock on real life, present or human interpretation! Fontaine’s doing it. Let’s tell him that this story has remained more innocent among others!
