Lola Versus: A Small Circle of Friends, Mom and Dad

Lola’s erstwhile fiance, Luke, is a handsome and sensitive visual artist who is preparing for a prestigious solo show of his paintings based on images from celebrity sex tapes. Luke is played by Joel Kinnaman, the Swedish actor best known for his breakout role in AMC’s hit series “The Killing.” He was recently featured in SAFE HOUSE, with Denzel Washington, and David Fincher’s THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO and will star in the upcoming ROBOCOP reboot. Kinnaman manages to keep the character sympathetic even after he dumps Lola.

Wein was relieved to find himself wearing far fewer hats with LOLA VERSUS than he had on his first feature film, where he and Lister-Jones were involved in everything from costumes and make-up to locations and craft services. He had “only” the roles of director, writer and executive producer to juggle with a full crew to support him, “That really helped me bring the vision to life and focus on the creative aspects,” he says. “When you’re truly independent, you’re flying by the seat of your pants. You aren’t able to spend the time watching performances or thinking about the script. We had so many great people to help us make this movie.”

Violet Wister (Greta Gerwig) is the indomitable group leader — though later shown somewhat dominated — whose central project is looking for troubled souls to rescue. “Violet has the element of the child who goes around looking for hurt birds,” says Stillman. “Her group is a self-designated animal rescue league, looking for ‘hurt birds’ they can assist. Unfortunately they sometimes misidentify a bird that isn’t a hurt; sometimes the hurt bird strikes back.”
