LONDON TRAVEL GUIDE
ROMAN BRITAIN

The Roman domination of Britain lasted for about four centuries, a period as long as the whole of modern history from Henry VIII to the present day. These four centuries saw the political awakening of the people of Europe under the tutelage of Rome, and their union in one single Empire. The same centuries saw the rise of Christianity, a religion essentially non-national in character which could and did disregard all political boundaries. The meeting of Roman with native civilization had results which varied according to the period and the sections of the native population concerned. In the early stage some of the population, particularly those in close contact with the Continent and the conquering army, may have imitated imported Roman goods, though the rest of the people were probably less willing to absorb new ideas. But many generations were born and died while the Roman domination lasted, and as time went on membership of the Empire became the basis of existence, and eventually to be a Briton became identical with being a citizen of the Empire. And so two things came to exist side by side: on the one hand, imported goods--material and intellectual--from the Mediterranean; on the other hand, genuine Romano-British goods in which native and foreign influences were blended. This continuous and concurrent process--an influx of Southern civilization and a native adaptation of it--was the main characteristic of Roman Britain. The Middle Ages began when political power was in native hands and Mediterranean imports became intermittent.
