Ioan Gruffudd Interview 4
by Martyn Palmer
Q But has it been fun?
A Its been brilliant and it's down to being in Ireland, being in Dublin and the Irish crew and the atmosphere and everyone is so lovely. Really, a fabulous group of people And the cast - what can I say?. It's so good. No disrespect to Clive, who is fantastic, but we haven't got a big superstar, Hollywood name. We're all just guys who are working away. So they're aren't any egos flying around. We're not contending with a big Hollywood actor thing. We're all part of it and Antoine's made it very clear to us, that we all have our say. So that's been good. It's been very much an ensemble feeling.
Q Did you know any of the others?
A No I'd never met Clive or Ray, but they're great lads. I'd met Hugh Dancy a couple of times socially. But we've all really gelled.
Q I guess that was important, after all you are playing a very tight knit group who rely on each other for your very lives..
A Yes and we feel comfortable in each other's pockets - because that's what we've been for the last 11/12 weeks of this shoot. And you don't get concerned if someone's a bit quiet one day. We just leave them to it because someone like Ray (Winstone) who's always so full of beans, if he's a bit quiet then he may have been out the night before or whatever (laughs). We haven't really had that feeling of cabin fever which can often happen on a film set and this location helps because it' s so vast and being outdoors all the time, because you're not stuck in a studio There's no real acting involved when you're on the back of a horse wearing this costume - and that big wall's there, you're instantly back in that period.
Q Did you like films like this when you were growing up?
A I grew up on mainly Westerns. But you know, I loved Ben Hur and Sparticus and Ten Commandments. They're epics and I think Gladiator is a fantastic film. And it seemed to ignite interest in that genre which is great. And the success of Gladiator is one of the reasons this is being made.
Q There's so much effort gone into the details of the film..
A Exactly. Look at my costume. I feel amazing in it. Once you put on the costume you think `right, that's it, I am a knight..' It's brilliant.
Q Is that full battle costume that you've got on?
A (laughs) No. This is just everyday sort of thing. (Shows picture of battle costume to be worn in filming following week) They''ve gone almost for a kind of Russian, eastern look. because Arthur is half Roman, half Briton. So they went for that sort of look. It's that Seven Samurai influence again.
Q What were you doing before this film?
A Well my girlfriend, Alice, and I moved out to Los Angeles in January . We just rented a house there for a year. I want to work there, I've always had that ambition, and I've got to be there if I want this to work. I did a pilot for CBS television, which got picked up for eight episodes. So after King Arthur I'm off to do that, it's called Century City, a law firm based drama. Actually, I did the pilot and then I got this, King Arthur, as a result of being out there in LA. That's pretty good, eh?
