Hideo Nakata Generic Interview - Ring 2
INTERVIEWER
So, having directed Ringu and Ringu Two why did you want to come and direct The Ring Two in America?
HIDEO NAKATA
Well, basically, when I first read the script. The draft of The Ring Two was very interesting. And, also very different from my, I mean, Ringu Two and, I thought it was very intriguing and powerful. And I thought, I could explore, an interesting possibility to make a different looking Ringu movie, different from the originals and different from the first one, so, that's it.
INTERVIEWER
Okay, can you set up the story a little bit for us of The Ring Two?
HIDEO NAKATA
So, Naomi Watts, saved her son's life by making a video copy, at the end of the first movie. And now, the movie, The Ring Two starts lets say two years later. She has recently moved to a small town in Oregon from Seattle. Uh, with kind of a guilt because she made a copy and that could be a potential killer video to someone, she doesn't know. And so the story starts with the her kind of guilt feeling and but at the same time she wants to forget about what happened in the past.
HIDEO NAKATA
And it looks okay, or peaceful in the small town in Oregon. Very quiet, calm, a small pretty town. But of course it's not, it's not peaceful. And, the victim is found in the same town and as a journalist she's now working for a small, newspaper company. And so, as a journalist she has to investigate the strange death. And she finds out that the tape killed the victim.
HIDEO NAKATA
And then, now she knows that Samara's spirit is coming back to them. To, herself and her son, but it's worse than the original movie because Samara's spirit wants the boy. And so, she has to face with Samara's evil spirit or the curse, again. But in much worse a manner because she's right in front her with the boy. And that's basically The Ring Two.
INTERVIEWER
Okay, so Samara's back, she's looking for something, and intensely focused on finding a mother. Let's talk about Naomi, what was it like having Naomi play Rachel? And, is it a really demanding role.
HIDEO NAKATA
Yeah, well, it's been a wonderful experience to work with her because let's say, let me put this special. I know the material very well and, so does she, our understanding about her character or back-story. I think because of our knowledge about her character actually, helped our collaboration. And, our collaboration really went very well and I really loved her way of acting, and when she's scared or well, lets say, her emotional intensity.
HIDEO NAKATA
She could create the really intense moment as an actress. And I loved that. She's not a horror movie actress but at the same time she knew that this was the moment that this movie requires her the biggest scare or intensity. And at the same time she played beautifully, with, David Dorfman, the boy.
HIDEO NAKATA
Or Simon Baker, the male character. Whenever she needs emotional expressions in a very dramatic situation not a horror situation, she also did it perfect. And she could concentrate almost perfectly with intensity, I admire her way of working. Because she is such a wonderful actress. And her interpretation of the character was perfect.
INTERVIEWER
Right. Lets talk about Mister David Dorfman. What was it like working with him?
HIDEO NAKATA
Well, he's smart and he's sensitive and he understood my directorial comments almost instantly. We communicated very well with my shorthand English. Why, even if I didn't finish the sentence he understood me kind of instinctively.
HIDEO NAKATA
And, again when he was focused he did his job marvelously I think. I'm not saying that sometimes he couldn't focus but let's say his first take, second take, were always almost perfect.
INTERVIEWER
Why do you think that that The Ring and the themes of The Ring are so scary? And what can fans of The Ring and Ringu expect from The Ring Two?
HIDEO NAKATA
Well, of course, the idea of Ringu and the The Ring is about a killer video, which can kill the viewer in seven day's time sharp. It's a very good hook for the young audience because nowadays teenagers have their own TV set and videocassette recorder or DVDs in each room. So, if the TV screen, if that's the threshold to Hell or from Hell, it's kind of interesting or scary for the universal young audience I think. The Ring Two leads on from that.
HIDEO NAKATA
The killer video it's more about Rachel's emotional journey, how to protect her own son and but in order to achieve, in order to protect her son, she has to explore. She has to find out Samara's background much further than the first movie. So, her emotional journey is one of the most interesting parts of the movie. And, of course, the way I showed Samara in this movie I believe is kind of scarier. I think I can say much scarier than the first one I think.
