Clive Owen Interview 4

by Martyn Palmer

Q Did all that time spent with the horses pay off when it came to filming?

A I was pretty wary of horses and once the deal was done on this movie, literally the day the deal was done, I called Jerry's office. I was sort of in denial about the horse riding, and literally that day I called Jerry's office and said `I've got to get on a horse tomorrow, I have to start now..' I mean, we couldn't mess about because 60, 70 per cent of the movie is on a horse. So being comfortable is a huge part of the job and I then went five, six days a week for two months before shooting, for at least an hour or two every day.

Q And are you now a convert?

A Oh I enjoy it. I'm sure a very good horseman would look at me and come to whatever conclusion. I'm not sure how good  I am as a horseman I am but I'm pretty fearless. I can pretty much sit on any horse and I would feel confident.

Q Did you have the same horse all the way through the shoot?

A Yeah and you get very attached as well. Very very attached. Because, you know, film acting, especially on a very physical action picture like this, is about delivering. And there is a huge amount of time setting up a particular shot and you have to ride in, sweep the sword in a particular way at this particular mark, everything is geared up and when your horse gets you through it, you are very, very grateful.

Q What was his name?

A Bohemian. Which was a bit of a worry to begin with but it was fine. `Bohemian? What's so bohemian about it?' But no, he  was fine. But it was difficult because horses aren't stupid and once you have taken them into a situation where it's not pleasant, you know, where there is noise or fire or a ton of people around, once they have done it once, they are hesitant to do it again. And some of them are brighter than others, so some of them would just keep doing it and others once they had got wind of it, would resist and you've got to then have the skills to drive them through it.

Q It's mostly a British cast. Am I right in thinking you worked with Ray Winstone before?

A  Yes, it was on a TV show called Sharman years ago. Ray's a great actor and a lovely man.

Q Had you worked with Ioan Gruffudd?

A No, I hadn't and not Keira Knightley either, but the cast were just great, all of that side of it was very good indeed. We had a really good time. Keira is doing so well. I've actually worked with Stellan (Skarsgard) before on one of the BMW films and he is a very nice chap and a great actor as well. The European actors in the film were very impressive, I mean these are serious actors. They got the best from some of the European counties I thought, to be in the movie. That was very good.
