Antoine Fuqua Interview 6
by Martyn Palmer
Q How was it working with Jerry Bruckheimer?
A Jerry is the best producer I've ever worked with. He's the best, man, he just is. He is very particular and he knows exactly what the movie is and why he hired me. He is one of those guys who doesn't put any pressure on the film maker, he backs you up. He has a lot of power but he doesn't flex it really. He comes to the set, we talk about it and says `well, whatever you think Antoine...' which is shocking because he has so much power. And in Hollywood sometimes people challenge you, you get a lot of confrontation with producers of that stature but with Jerry man, it was just kind of like easy, he would just go `whatever you think, you have to go do it..' He knows what film making is so he kind of supports the director and says `whatever you want to do..' you sort of live and die by the sword (laughs) and that's cool, man.
Q When will see your work?
A July 7 is the release date. I hope we have a big premier in London.
Q I hope you take a nice long holiday after that..
A You know what, I'm going to take a month off and then I'm going to dive into something else. I've got a few things cooking. I love film making, I love it man, and what else am I going to do with my time. I spend time with my family and as long as they are happy I'm happy. But I enjoy being on set, too.
Q Despite all the logistical problems, did you enjoy being in Ireland?
A I enjoyed being in Ireland sometimes, but not every day (laughs). But my family was here in LA and it was tough for me, I've got a baby girl and my wife is here and half way through the movie she is pregnant so for me is `OK, I've got to get this done. It's getting dark and gloomy and gray and cold every day' and the job is getting harder and harder so I didn't get a chance to go around and enjoy the country as much as other people did, I was sort of focused on the movie.
