PIGMENT
Today when everything comes bottled and prepared for us we have a habit of thinking of paint as an entity -- it isn't of course, it is a mixture of at least two things: pigment and a medium. Pigment is the solid color matter itself and the medium is the fluid substance it is carried in. The particles of pigment vary in size and form. For clarity, try thinking of paint pigment as stones -- which much of it is -- varying from the grade of fine sand used in smooth cement to pebbles imbedded in a tarred driveway. Keeping this in mind you won't find it so hard to understand that we can take samples of paint color -- pigment -- and make microchemical analyses to determine what kind of matter it is. In the early days artists ground their own pigments, and tried to get them as fine and smooth as possible, but even then they discovered that the degree of fineness achievable was not uniform. If you could see them under high power magnification, you would be amazed at the difference in the size of the particles of various paints. This is the third dimension of paint itself which we often forget about completely. So we have the pigment of paint as a particle of color offered for application on the canvas in a medium.
