Rainy River

The administrative district of Rainy River has an area of 7,276 square miles and in 2006 contained a population of 21,564. There are a number of small rural villages. There are only two towns. Fort Frances is the administrative centre. It has a pulp and paper mill and numerous retail stores.
Rainy River is a railway divisional point and is located in an agricultural area.
Agriculture in Rainy River is encouraged by the presence of clay soils developed on the deposits of glacial Lake Agassiz. There are about 400,000 acres of soils suitable for agriculture. The climate is also favourable being much more like that of the prairies than the rest of Northern Ontario. Hay, oats, barley, flax and wheat are the chief crops.
Steep Rock Lake Iron Mine is located in Rainy River District but it is quite removed from the settled region. By draining the lake a rich deposit of iron ore is made available.
Kenora
The district of Kenora, including Patricia, is by far the largest and least densely populated administrative unit in Ontario, containing 153,000 square miles and 64,419 people ( 2006). The city of Kenora had an area of  81.4 square miles and in 2006 its population was about 15,000. People live in the region from Sioux Lookout to the Manitoba border and this area of less than 2,500 square miles may perhaps be considered as a unit in the human geography of Ontario, although it is certainly not densely populated. The area of occupied farm land is 165,000 acres, with 30,000 acres listed as improved.
Kenora is the administrative and business centre and tourist headquarters as well as an important railway division point. Keewatin is the site of a large flour mill. Dryden situated in an extensive clay plain is the most important agricultural centre and also has a pulp mill. Sioux Lookout is the headquarters through which the Patricia mining areas get much of their supplies.
