Commandment 2 - Thou Shalt Attract a Director
Roger Kumble, who directed Cruel Intentions, came in fairly early in the process. He read the script and immediately began pursuing the project as a director. "It was taking the genre of a romantic comedy and dumping it on its head," explains Kumble, "and that's what appealed to me about the film."
Kumble met with Konrad and Ricky Strauss, who was at Columbia Pictures at the time and became the executive producer on the project. "His passion for the material, his suggestions and his ideas about how to translate what was written were what got us so excited about Roger," explains Konrad. "He had a way of putting a spin on how some of these moments were going to play out in the script."
Kumble was going to be a great collaborator, but the question still remained-should a woman direct women in a film about women's unique point of view?
"In this case, it worked to our advantage to bring a man's voice in as director because another perspective has helped flesh out the material," says Konrad. "It was great to have a guy like Roger say, 'Well, you know, if that's what you guys say happens, then okay, but that's not what a guy would think.' And this process was a great way to get a good balance."
