a The First Part of the Biblical Answer
4
On the one hand, the Bible tells us that God has created us for fellowship with him. This idea is most clearly developed in the early portions of Genesis.
We saw that they are not accounts of our great-great-great-great-great-great (to the nth degree) grandparents. These stories, set in a particular point in time, are stories that are true about every point in time. Whatever they may tell us about someone else's ancient past, they tell us infinitely more about our own living present. They describe us. The Hebrew word ad-ham, for example, from which we get "Adam," is not a proper name for an individual. It is simply the word for "man" -- every man -- just as "Eve" simply means "woman" -- every woman. What is true of Adam and Eve (of "man" and "woman") is true of us all as well. We are not reading ancient history. We are reading "our" story as it is put in pictorial form.
