Venice is the city of islands, one of the most visited locations in Italy and the world. If your time in Venice is limited, that is, if you will not stay here and go on a day trip, you are in the right place. We took a day tour from Bologna to Venice. To those who ask when to go to Venice, whose streets we walked around in the cold winter sun on Sunday, December 15th, we answer that we should not go in December.
The time you will spare for Venice should be a maximum of two days anyway. If you want to have more fun and be a more romantic person, it is entirely up to you to extend the time. The best times to visit are spring and summer. Also, January-March is the carnival period. (dates vary) You will see many people with masks on the streets between these dates.
The story of the formation of Venice is quite interesting. 600 years ago, they changed the direction of the rivers towards lakes to protect themselves against attacks. As the water level in the lakes began to increase, the city was gradually flooded. The next solution was to build a city on wooden piles.
The wooden piles, which are known to have been brought from Slovenia, did not rot, and were strengthened by water with high mineral levels, as they remained away from oxygen under water. However, especially in the winter months, walking in the city may become impossible as water levels rise. During the hours we visited, we occasionally heard sirens warning that the water level would rise.
Where is Venice?
Here is an important question about Venice: Where is Venice? Venice is located in the Veneto region, which covers the northeastern part of Italy. It also serves as the capital of this region.
The first option to reach Venice is direct flights from our country. The flight to Venice takes approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes. Venice Marco Polo Airport is located on the Italian mainland, not in the island region of Venice. There are different methods to reach Venice from here. The most logical and effortless solution is to use the sea route. You can get a round trip from this address for approximately 25 euros. If you want to come by bus, you can reach Piazzale Roma, near the train station, for 5 Euros.
We came from Bologna by train to reach Venice. Stazione di Venezia Santa Lucia station is located on the Venetian islands. You reach the center of Venice by using the Ponte della Liberta bridge. After getting off the station, you can use the Barefoot Bridge and walk to the main central square, San Marco, or use the Vaporettos that depart from right in front of the station.
If you are coming here from other cities of Italy like us, you can easily use Santa Lucia. While tickets from Rome start from 30 euros at their most affordable prices, there are tickets from Florence starting from 20 euros, from Bologna from 12 euros, and from Milan from 20 euros. For other routes and reservations, be sure to buy your ticket in advance. https://www.trenitalia.com/ The thing you need to pay attention to here is the Lucia Train station. Some trains go to the mainland, so you will need a separate means of transportation for the Venetian islands.
For transportation, you can also choose Flixbus buses, which are Europe’s cheap travel buses. For example, you can find a ticket for 16 Euros for your bus trip from Rome. Flixbus buses drop you off in the Tronchetto area (close to S.Luca) in Venice. However, when using Flixbuses, carefully check the places where the buses pick up passengers. Sometimes they leave it in a location quite far from the city. For example, its location in Rome is not the central termini station, but Tiburtina. You may have to use a separate means of transportation to Rome from here.
Although gondolas are a very romantic option for transportation within the city of Venice, their prices are very expensive. Half-hour tours of the gondolas, which can accommodate a maximum of 6 people, cost 80 Eur. (Down with the Euro) There are also more affordable tours. If you take vaporetto number 1, you can tour along the canal. Of course, this doesn’t have a gondola atmosphere.
