US President Donald Trump said China will sign a first-stage trade agreement on January 15th, which will increase the purchase of agricultural products from the US in exchange for lower tariffs. There was no confirmation by China regarding the day of the agreement.
Trump said in a statement on Twitter that the signing protocol will take place in the White House, said he would go to Beijing to negotiate the second phase of the agreement.
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce and the Chinese Foreign Ministry did not respond to requests for confirmation of the day of the agreement and did not provide a statement on the protocol. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce said on Monday that the weekly press conference was postponed to Thursday. The Chinese Foreign Ministry will hold regular information at 3:00 on Thursday.
Although information on the day of the agreement has not yet been confirmed by China, Beijing said it is in favor of the agreement. On Tuesday, the People’s Daily headline commented, “It is everyone’s wish that China and the US sign the first-stage trade agreement.”
The deal was announced on December 13th, with the US postponing tariffs for $ 160 billion worth of Chinese products, including smartphones and toys, and lowering rates of some existing tariffs.
China has made some commitments to the amount of agricultural products imported from the United States, intellectual and industrial property rights, technology transfer and currency practices.
