Surprising 'New Year's Eve' movie facts

Zac Efron signed on for the comedy primarily so he could kiss a co-star.

Garry Marshall’s ‘New Year’s Eve,’ featuring a star studded cast, opens this weekend. It’s the first, and at this point, only movie to be shot in Times Square during the famed dropping of the ball.

Co-stars Zac Efron and Michelle Pfeiffer previously appeared together in “Hairspray” (2007). In a recent press conference, Efron revealed that he had a big crush on Pfeiffer during production of that movie and found himself tongue-tied. The main reason he agreed to appear in ‘New Year’s Eve’ was so that he could not only play opposite the legendary actress, but kiss her as well. He later stated that kissing her was “amazing.”

Lea Michele and Ashton Kutcher spent two weeks in an elevator together during production. She reportedly felt so intimidated by Kutcher’s intelligence and breadth of knowledge that she spent her nights researching topics to talk about in between takes.

One of Hilary Swank’s lifelong ambitions was to work with Robert De Niro. In “New Year’s Eve,’ she got to do just that playing a television producer whose father (De Niro) is dying man. Just before their first scene together, Swank sees the famed method actor lying motionless in a hospital bed.

“I’m thinking, ‘Wow, he’s giving it to me. Like we’re connected here. We are connected. Me and De Niro – method,'” she said during a recent press conference. “I start getting a little emotional. But the camera’s not on me, but we were just getting into the mood, of the father-daughter, father dying kind of thing. I’m feeling it. I’m going deep with De Niro. The next thing I know, he’s opens his eyes, ‘Aaah, anyone got that coffee?’ And I’m like, ‘Oh, my god, he was sleeping!’ I thought he was going deep for me. The truth is, he’d been in that bed all day, from like six in the morning. He took a nap!”

Director Garry Marshall considers actor Hector Elizondo his good luck charm, and has cast him in every movie he’s made.

Compared to some of her previous movies like “The A-Team” and “Next,” Jessica Biel reportedly found playing a pregnant woman in ‘New Year’s Eve’ to be a pleasant change of pace. ‘I had a [pregnant belly] suit on,” she related on a British talk show. “I ate whatever I wanted — it was great!”
